Description

Olive-green to golden-brown Siderite blades overlap in an open cluster, with pearly faces and darker areas between them. Numerous tiny clear, needle-like crystals nestle among the blades, adding a delicate sparkle and a fine contrast to the broader Siderite crystals.

The bevelled glass display base is included.

Look closely between the Siderite blades and you can see slender transparent crystals, rather like tiny pine needles. Their appearance is consistent with Quartz, but this association is not confirmed from photographs alone; they are described here as Quartz-like needle crystals.

Locality supplied: Kaiwu Mine, Hezhang County, Bijie, Guizhou Province, China.

The bladed growth described here gives the specimen a strong sense of direction. Overlapping elongated forms create layers and spaces through the group, while reflections emphasise individual edges. The overall arrangement is worth appreciating alongside the details of each exposed surface, particularly when comparing the piece with more compact crystal clusters.

Siderite is iron carbonate, a member of the same broad carbonate family that includes Calcite and Rhodochrosite. It can form rhombohedral crystals, curved aggregates and more compact masses. Yellowish, brown and grey tones occur in the species, with variations in composition and surface alteration contributing to its range of appearances.

A crystallised Siderite specimen invites attention to the way faces repeat and overlap. The larger outline may look sculptural, while closer inspection reveals smaller changes in direction and surface texture. Where other minerals are recorded, their different habits provide a useful comparison with the carbonate growth. The appeal is in the arrangement of these features rather than a uniform surface.

The recorded origin is Kaiwu Mine, Hezhang County, Bijie, Guizhou Province, China. Within a collection of Siderite specimens, this locality gives the piece a geographical identity alongside its particular crystal habit and natural setting.

The specimen measures 80 × 70 × 40 mm, with a recorded weight of 280 g. The proportions give a useful guide to its place in a display, with the individual crystal arrangement and mineral association remaining the principal points of interest.

Support the stable matrix or the supplied mount when moving the specimen, avoiding pressure on projecting growth. A secure indoor display allows its natural form and surface detail to be appreciated while protecting exposed crystal edges.
