Blue Botryoidal Hemimorphite
Wenshan District, Yunnan Province, China
Sold
Description
A substantial free-standing Hemimorphite with rounded turquoise-blue mounds, paler aqua microcrystalline areas and a contrasting natural matrix.
Attributed to the Wenshan mining district of Yunnan Province, China, this 3 kg Hemimorphite specimen has a broad, richly textured face measuring 14 × 14 × 8 cm overall. Rounded botryoidal formations rise from the matrix, with colour shifting from vivid turquoise blue to softer aqua and pale blue-green.
The central ridges and finer microcrystalline areas give the display face depth from multiple viewpoints. The reverse exposes the natural host matrix. This is the exact free-standing specimen shown in the four photographs, including its reverse.
Identification: The specimen was initially listed as Larimar. The supplier subsequently confirmed its identification as Hemimorphite from Wenshan, Yunnan; this listing uses the corrected identification.
The rounded, botryoidal growth described here is an aggregate habit: many small crystals contribute to a larger curved surface. It offers a different kind of mineral display to a group of sharply pointed crystals. The adjoining rounded areas, recesses and changes in surface texture help bring out the three-dimensional form.
Hemimorphite is a hydrated zinc silicate, usually formed as a secondary mineral in the oxidised parts of zinc deposits. It can develop thin crystals, fans and radiating groups, or rounded botryoidal surfaces. These different habits explain why two specimens of the same mineral can have such different appearances and display textures.
The name relates to a difference in form at opposite ends of its crystals. In an aggregate, however, the broader pattern of growth may be the more obvious feature. Rounded surfaces, fine sparkle and the relationship between the coloured material and its host can all contribute to its character. The recorded form of this particular piece is the basis for its description.
The recorded origin is Wenshan District, Yunnan Province, China. Within a collection of Hemimorphite specimens, this locality gives the piece a geographical identity alongside its particular crystal habit and natural setting.
The specimen measures 14 × 14 × 8 cm, with a recorded weight of 3 kg. Its scale gives the natural architecture room to be appreciated as a whole, while the finer growth provides detail for closer study.
Condition: Supplied as natural and untreated, with no repairs or restoration reported.
Support the stable matrix or the supplied mount when moving the specimen, avoiding pressure on projecting growth. A secure indoor display allows its natural form and surface detail to be appreciated while protecting exposed crystal edges.
