Description

A compact, sculptural cluster of deep forest-green Fluorite cubes with textured natural faces and contrasting metallic Pyrite.

This attractive Huanggang specimen consists of densely intergrown Fluorite cubes in deep forest-green to blue-green tones. Several prominent crystals retain clearly defined cubic geometry, giving the piece a strong architectural form despite its compact dimensions.

The crystal surfaces show extensive natural etching and frosting. Fine pits, growth textures and reflective areas break up the darker faces, revealing subtle variations in colour and lustre as the specimen is turned under light.

Darker saturated Fluorite dominates the central crystal groups, while thinner edges and smaller areas reveal more translucent green tones. Scattered metallic Pyrite provides small reflective highlights and additional mineralogical contrast.

At 8 cm wide, the specimen offers substantial visual presence without requiring a large display space. Its interlocking cubes and three-dimensional arrangement can be appreciated from several viewing angles.

Handling and care: Fluorite has perfect cleavage and should be handled carefully from the solid base. Avoid impacts, pressure on crystal edges, water and chemical cleaners; use a soft dry brush for light dusting.

The cubic habit gives the specimen a strongly geometric character. The visible faces and edges show how separate crystals meet and overlap within the group. Larger faces establish the outline, while smaller growth adds detail between them. The balance between exposed cubes and intergrown areas is a useful feature when comparing this piece with others of the same mineral.

The recorded Pyrite contributes a metallic element to the association. Light reflects from its faces differently to the non-metallic growth around it, allowing small metallic areas to stand out within the specimen. That contrast is a useful part of the display and gives the piece interest for collectors of mixed mineral associations, as well as the principal species.

Fluorite is calcium fluoride and crystallises in the cubic system. Cubes and octahedra are among its familiar forms, but intergrowths, modified faces and changes during growth can produce much more complex outlines. This combination of recognisable geometry and considerable variation makes Fluorite a rewarding mineral to collect by both crystal habit and locality.

Fluorite can be colourless or show a wide range of colours, sometimes within one specimen. Transparency, crystal thickness and illumination influence how those colours appear. Its glassy faces contrast with more textured areas and any accompanying matrix. Colour zoning and fluorescence are separate properties; a particular response under ultraviolet light should only be expected where it has been recorded for the individual piece.

The recorded origin is Huanggang Mine, Inner Mongolia, China. Within a collection of Fluorite specimens, this locality gives the piece a geographical identity alongside its particular crystal habit and natural setting.

The specimen measures 8 × 5.5 × 4.5 cm, with a recorded weight of 247 g. The proportions give a useful guide to its place in a display, with the individual crystal arrangement and mineral association remaining the principal points of interest.

Condition: Natural and unpolished. Minor contacts, cleavages, surface irregularities and extraction-related edges are consistent with a natural mineral specimen. Please examine all photographs carefully; the exact specimen shown will be supplied.

Fluorite has well-developed cleavage and should be supported by its stable matrix or mount. Avoid pressing on projecting cubes or corners. A secure indoor position allows the natural geometry and colour to be appreciated while keeping the exposed growth protected.
