About this Dioptase specimen
This Dioptase with Fornacite specimen has a broad, low profile with closely packed green crystals rising in an uneven ridge. Larger blocky crystals stand above a finer crystalline surface, producing a layered arrangement of angular faces and recessed pockets. Deep green centres are bordered by brighter emerald and turquoise-green areas where light passes through thinner edges.
The Dioptase has a glassy lustre, with broad faces that reflect strongly as the viewing angle changes. The crystals are intergrown, but many retain recognisable outlines and distinct face boundaries. Smaller crystals around their bases add detail to the lower part of the cluster, while the larger upper crystals define its silhouette.
Fine associated Fornacite provides a textural counterpoint to the bolder Dioptase growth. The association is best examined in the close photographs, where the finer mineral surfaces can be compared with the smooth reflective faces nearby. The interest lies in this contrast of crystal scale and surface texture within a single compact specimen.
The reverse view reveals exposed pale and reddish-brown matrix beneath the green crystallisation. This helps show the relationship between the crystal-bearing surface and the material supporting it. Side views reveal the depth of the cluster and the irregular distribution of the larger crystals, details that are less apparent from the main photograph alone.
The photographs and rotating video record the exact specimen from different angles. Together they show the principal crystal face, the supporting matrix and the changes in lustre as individual faces catch the light.
