Description

A striking Peruvian association of mirror-bright Pyrite, dark Sphalerite and clear Quartz. A prominent metallic crystal rises above smaller reflective faces and sprays of Quartz, giving this 347 g specimen depth and contrast from every angle.

This cabinet specimen brings together sharply defined Pyrite faces, darker Sphalerite and clusters of clear to white Quartz on its natural matrix. The larger Pyrite crystal provides a strong focal point, while smaller metallic crystals and slender Quartz points fill the spaces around it.

Originating from the Alimon Mine in Peru’s Huaron District, the specimen measures 11 × 6.5 × 4 cm and weighs 347 g.

The accompanying Quartz brings a silicate crystal habit into the association. Its surfaces and crystal outlines contrast with the featured mineral, giving the specimen more than one kind of growth to examine. The way the minerals occupy the same piece is part of its character: the setting retains their natural relationship and adds depth to the overall display.

The recorded Sphalerite contributes a darker component to this association. Its relationship with the other minerals gives the specimen contrast in colour, lustre and crystal habit. For a collector, the piece offers more than a single mineral surface: the accompanying growth and the way it is distributed across the matrix are part of its individual character.

Pyrite is iron sulphide, known for its brassy metallic colour and crystallisation in the cubic system. Cubes, octahedra and pyritohedra are among its characteristic forms. Unlike gold, it is a brittle crystalline mineral. Well-defined faces and the way crystals meet make Pyrite particularly interesting for someone collecting natural geometry as well as metallic lustre.

Fine lines on Pyrite faces can reflect its growth pattern rather than decoration added to the surface. A group may combine broad mirror-like reflections with darker recesses between crystals. Where an accompanying mineral is recorded, the contrast between metallic Pyrite and that material provides another aspect to study, alongside the shape and spacing of the individual crystals.

The recorded origin is Alimon Mine, Huaron District, Pasco Province, Peru. Within a collection of Pyrite specimens, this locality gives the piece a geographical identity alongside its particular crystal habit and natural setting.

The specimen measures 11 × 6.5 × 4 cm, with a recorded weight of 347 g. The proportions give a useful guide to its place in a display, with the individual crystal arrangement and mineral association remaining the principal points of interest.

Care: Handle by the matrix, protect the projecting Quartz and Pyrite faces from knocks, and keep the specimen dry.
