Description

Extensive soft pink Rhodochrosite is accented by pale Stilbite and scattered Quartz crystals across a contrasting sulphide-rich matrix.

This attractive cabinet miniature comes from the Starnitsa Deposit in the Davidkovo Ore Field of Bulgaria. Soft pink Rhodochrosite covers much of the principal display surface, producing a delicate colour contrast against the darker sulphide-bearing matrix beneath.

Pale cream to colourless Stilbite crystals are distributed between the Rhodochrosite growth, while scattered Quartz adds further brightness and sparkle. The mixture of compact pink crystallisation, bladed pale crystals and reflective points gives the specimen a varied, textured appearance.

The shallow, elongated form displays the mineral association clearly from the front and from lower viewing angles. At 9 cm across and weighing 102 grams, it is well suited to a cabinet, shelf or locality-focused European mineral collection.

Locality: Starnitsa Deposit, Davidkovo Ore Field, Banite, Smolyan Province, Bulgaria.

Handling and care: Handle from the solid matrix and avoid contact with the delicate surface crystals. Keep dry, away from acids and prolonged strong sunlight, and clean only with a soft dry brush.

The recorded Stilbite association introduces a different habit alongside the principal mineral. Stilbite is a zeolite mineral known for grouped and sheaf-like growth. Its texture and usually softer appearance can complement more strongly reflective faces, making the association useful to study as a natural combination of crystal forms.

The accompanying Stilbite adds another crystal texture to the piece. Its grouped growth has a softer visual character beside the more reflective principal mineral, creating a contrast that is worth following across the specimen. The association gives the surface more than one type of detail to explore and allows the minerals to be appreciated together in their natural setting.

The accompanying Quartz brings a silicate crystal habit into the association. Its surfaces and crystal outlines contrast with the featured mineral, giving the specimen more than one kind of growth to examine. The way the minerals occupy the same piece is part of its character: the setting retains their natural relationship and adds depth to the overall display.

Rhodochrosite is manganese carbonate and belongs to the Calcite group. Pink and rose-red tones are familiar, but the species can show a wider range of colours. It occurs in mineral veins and other manganese-bearing environments. Crystallised pieces are interesting for the shape of the growth and its relationship to any accompanying minerals, as well as their colour.

The carbonate habit can produce distinct faces or closely grouped aggregates, with light revealing different textures across the surface. The intensity of the colour is only one element of a specimen’s character. Its silhouette, the distribution of growth and the contrast with recorded associated material provide useful points of comparison within a collection of manganese minerals or natural crystal formations.

The recorded origin is Starnitsa Deposit, Bulgaria. Within a collection of Rhodochrosite specimens, this locality gives the piece a geographical identity alongside its particular crystal habit and natural setting.

The specimen measures 9 × 4 × 2.5 cm, with a recorded weight of 102 g. The proportions give a useful guide to its place in a display, with the individual crystal arrangement and mineral association remaining the principal points of interest.

Condition: Natural contacts, matrix edges, small cleavages and extraction-related irregularities may be present.

Support the stable matrix or the supplied mount when moving the specimen, avoiding pressure on projecting growth. A secure indoor display allows its natural form and surface detail to be appreciated while protecting exposed crystal edges.
