Description

Overlapping olive-gold to brown Siderite blades form a broad, layered cluster, with reflective faces catching the light. Small pale Calcite crystals are scattered across the blades and nestled along their edges, adding a fine contrast to the warmer Siderite.

The Siderite blades range from olive-brown to warmer golden tones, with bright reflections on some faces. Fine pale Calcite crystals sit across the surface and between the blades. The broad, relatively shallow form makes the layered crystal arrangement easy to appreciate.

Locality supplied: Kaiwu Mine, Hezhang County, Bijie, Guizhou Province, China.

The crossing arrangement described above is an important part of the specimen’s silhouette. It lets the direction of individual crystals be followed through the group, with open spaces making their outlines more apparent. Intersecting crystals alone do not establish a specific twin law; here the description concerns the visible arrangement rather than a laboratory-confirmed crystallographic relationship.

The accompanying Calcite contributes a different crystal habit and surface character to the specimen. Its lighter or more translucent areas provide a contrast with the other recorded growth, allowing their separate outlines to be followed. The association is worth appreciating as a whole, with the arrangement and contact between the minerals adding detail beyond the featured crystals alone.

Siderite is iron carbonate, a member of the same broad carbonate family that includes Calcite and Rhodochrosite. It can form rhombohedral crystals, curved aggregates and more compact masses. Yellowish, brown and grey tones occur in the species, with variations in composition and surface alteration contributing to its range of appearances.

A crystallised Siderite specimen invites attention to the way faces repeat and overlap. The larger outline may look sculptural, while closer inspection reveals smaller changes in direction and surface texture. Where other minerals are recorded, their different habits provide a useful comparison with the carbonate growth. The appeal is in the arrangement of these features rather than a uniform surface.

The recorded origin is Kaiwu Mine, Hezhang County, Bijie, Guizhou Province, China. Within a collection of Siderite specimens, this locality gives the piece a geographical identity alongside its particular crystal habit and natural setting.

The specimen measures 9.5 × 6.5 × 3 cm, with a recorded weight of 342 g. The proportions give a useful guide to its place in a display, with the individual crystal arrangement and mineral association remaining the principal points of interest.

Support the stable matrix or the supplied mount when moving the specimen, avoiding pressure on projecting growth. A secure indoor display allows its natural form and surface detail to be appreciated while protecting exposed crystal edges.
