Description

A small crystal with an unusually dramatic silhouette, this smoky Amethyst sceptre brings together glassy Quartz, deep violet colour and a crown of overlapping points. Broad faces open into stepped recesses, while the asymmetrical outline gives the specimen the presence of a miniature crystal sculpture. Its appeal lies as much in the intricate growth as in the colour: there is something different to follow on every side.

The elongated smoky Quartz stem supports later Amethyst overgrowth, forming a complex, multi-point sceptre rather than a single simple termination. The upper crystals overlap and project at different angles, creating an irregular crown with a strong three-dimensional character. Viewed from the side, the changing levels of the crystal faces make the secondary growth particularly striking.

Colour gathers in distinct violet and deep-purple zones within paler, smoky-grey Quartz. Some areas are almost colourless, allowing the darker bands to appear suspended inside the crystal. Purple outlines and concentrated patches follow the growth, bringing definition to the terminations and contrasting with the softer smoky interior. The balance changes with the viewing angle and the direction of the light.

Skeletal faces, naturally etched surfaces and stepped growth add a second layer of detail. Smooth reflective areas sit beside textured recesses, giving the surface a layered, architectural quality. Fine internal features remain visible through the clearer Quartz, while the minor Hematite inclusions add scattered reddish-brown accents within the crystal and along its growth features.

This type of Zimbabwean smoky Amethyst is also encountered under the trade name Shangaan Amethyst. Here, the combination of sceptre growth, internal zoning and contrasting smoky and violet tones gives the individual specimen its distinctive character.

This is a compact display specimen with considerable detail to explore. It is natural and untreated, retaining its crystal growth and surface texture.
