About this Dioptase specimen
Deep green Dioptase crystals occupy a recessed area in a contrasting tan to reddish-brown matrix. The principal cluster projects from the lower part of the display face, while a more isolated crystal sits above it. This arrangement leaves much of the host surface visible and makes the relationship between the crystals and their supporting matrix easy to appreciate.
The larger crystals display broad angular faces and a glassy lustre. Their dark green centres contrast with brighter emerald edges, and individual faces produce strong flashes when viewed from different directions. Smaller intergrown crystals fill gaps around the main group, giving the crystalline area more depth than its outline initially suggests.
The surrounding matrix has a granular, uneven texture with scattered dark grains and small reflective points. Its subdued earthy colour provides a clear contrast with the green Dioptase. Rather than forming a continuous covering, the crystals occupy distinct patches and pockets, allowing their outlines to remain visible against the surrounding material.
Fornacite is recorded as an associated mineral on this specimen. The fine association is secondary in visual scale to the larger Dioptase crystals and the exposed matrix. Close inspection therefore offers two levels of detail: the bold geometry of the green crystals and the finer textures around their margins.
The side photographs show the projecting crystal group and the thickness of the matrix, while the wider presentation photograph gives an overall view of the piece. Together they record the exact specimen and show how its clustered and isolated crystals are distributed across the natural host surface.
